| The New Era of Poker Grinding |
|
In the last ten years, poker’s popularity has risen substantially with the introduction of online poker and the addition of televised poker to cable and satellite networks. Broadcasts of tournaments such World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker captured the action and excitement of the game. This spike in popularity has attributed to the fact that many people have given up their day jobs to play poker full time. This is referred to as grinding in the poker community. Grinding can be defined as playing poker for long periods of time in order to grind out a profit. Grinders typically play poker for eight or more hours per day and this is how they make their living. One of the most important aspects of grinding is establishing, managing and growing your poker bankroll. This is a step by step process that if done correctly can lead a poker player to earning a substantial living and protecting your initial investment. Gambling often turns into a full blown addiction. However, when poker is your profession it can be hard to become aware of an addiction. So it is important to have someone, whether it is a spouse, family member or friend that can spot your addiction before it becomes too big of a problem. When you are a professional poker player or a grinder, the normal signals of addiction are not relevant. However, there are a few signs to look for in these players that can help you spot an addiction. If you are dishonest, lie about how much you play or how much you win or lose, you may be addicted. Also if you seem unwilling to have a conversation on the topic of an addiction to gambling, this is an instant red flag. Also, if you play poker tournaments in an attempt to win back lost money, you probably have an addiction. Grinding has become more prevalent among professional and amateur poker players alike. It is important to set limits on how much you gamble and also how long. Whether it be online poker or playing in the casino, use your best judgment and separate grinding from gambling. |
